How it works
How it works

The Melasma Peel treatment involves using a proprietary combination of active ingredients with proven efficacy that interfere with the entire process of melanin production. In addition to removing the accumulation of excess melanin (pigment), the Melasma Peel treatment inhibits the formation of new pigment. Melasma Peel works via several mechanisms:

  • Accelerates epidermal renewal to remove the accumulation of melanin
  • Reduces the amount of melanin formation and decreases dark spots
  • Blocks the transfer of melanin from the melanocyte to the keratinocyte, thus inhibiting the migration of pigment to epidermal layers of the skin
  • Reduces the synthesis of melanin inside melanocytes

The Melasma Peel consists of 51 active ingredients, including numerous tyrosinase inhibitors, which block melanin production in the skin. The 5 key tyrosinase inhibitors and lightening agents include:

  • Kojic Acid
  • Azelaic Acid
  • Arbutin
  • Phytic Acid
  • Licorice
  • Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)

Le Lux Beautique also offers the prescription formulation, which is only available to physicians, and is compounded with 8 percent hydroquinone for increased skin lightening.

Intended benefits include:

  • Melasma
  • Sunspots
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scarring
  • Age spots
  • Post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Skin discoloration on chest, neck, and back
  • Blemishes
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dark spots on buttocks
  • Dark patches on knees, elbows, feet

During the treatment cleansing the skin will be prepped with an oil removing solution to allow even penetration of the peel. Tingling and a strong smell are expected.

The thick, clay colored mask will be applied and must be left on at home for a period of 5-12 hours. The duration will be dependent on Fitzpatrick type and skin condition. While the mask is on, a water mist, will need to be used to keep the product moist (not wet) to ensure it does not dry out.

Once the mask has been left on for the desired time, it will need to be completely but gently removed at home using room temperature water, gently pat dried and post care routine would commence.

Immediately after removing your mask at home, moderate erythema and heat is to be expected.

What to expect (Individual reactions may vary):

  • 24 Hours: Start your after care routine. Moderate erythema, strong heat and moderate swelling.
  • 48 Hours: Strong erythema, moderate heat, swelling and itching, mild flaking.
  • 72 Hours: Mild erythema and heat, strong itching and flaking.

Avoid microdermabrasion treatments. Microdermabrasion treatments work similar to chemical peels, except this treatment uses a gentle abrasive tool to peel off the outer layer of skin. If you are planning on having a chemical peel performed, you should avoid having a microdermabrasion treatment for at least 14 days before the procedure.

Avoid tanning beds or prolonged exposure to the sun 14 days prior to treatment.  Always use a zinc oxide sunscreen with SPF 30+.

Avoid self-tanning topical products for two weeks before your chemical peel

Men should avoid shaving 2-3 days before treatment.

  • Avoid cosmetic treatments within two weeks of your peel such as neurotoxins, fillers, resurfacing treatments, lasers.
  • Take antiviral medication as needed. Some people preparing for a chemical peel will not need to take antiviral medication. However, if you have a history of herpes infections on or around your mouth, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication for you to take before and after the treatment.
